Browsing using the Table of Contents and Index
You can browse an electronic book in a similar manner to exploring a print book
- by using the Table of Contents and the Index.
The Table of Contents appears in the left-hand frame (collection window). The
chapters and/or sections of the book appear as clickable headings, with
graphics to indicate if there are additional content levels below this heading.
To explore a book you have just opened:
-
Click on the + symbol to expand a heading to reveal further content headings.
-
Click on a heading to display the content for that heading in the right-side
frame.
-
To move forwards and backwards through the contents in the right-hand frame
(book window), click on the
Next Page and Prev Page
text links at the top and bottom of each screen.
Note: To return to your starting page after clicking a link in
the right-side frame, you can click on your browser Back button.
To return to the collection window to enter a new book, click on the Home (Home)
button.
The Index
It may be convenient to locate your topic using the Index. Indexes are located
at the bottom of the Table of Contents in the left-hand frame of most books.
-
Scroll to the bottom of the Table of Contents. You will see the heading
Index
displayed.
-
Click on the + symbol next to the
Index
heading to expand the sub-chapters, ie the letters of the alphabet.
-
Click on the letter that matches the first letter of your search term. This
will display the Index listings for that letter in the right-hand frame.
-
Scroll down the right-hand frame until you reach the term you are looking for.
-
Click on the blue hypertext reference to link to the associated item in the
right-hand frame. The corresponding location within the book will be
highlighted in the Table of Contents.
