Advanced Search
Advanced Search allows you to build a query using a simplified Boolean form.
When you click on the Advanced Search button in the Search Navigation Bar
(middle of the top navigation bar), the Advanced Search form will appear in a
pop up window.
Construct your query
On the Advanced Search page under Query Options you'll find four labelled text
entry. Your query text in each of the boxes can be up to 100 characters long.
Note that the search engine will factor in all of your entries, so be careful
that your entries don’t cancel each other out. The four text box options are:
-
with all of these words (AND)
-
with at least one of the words (OR)
-
with the exact phrase
-
without the words (NOT)
What content to search
If a user has navigated to a book level, they can execute their simplified
Boolean query against a particular book. Alternatively, they can select one,
many or all of the nine topics in the “high level topic” combo-box*. Select the
appropriate radio button beside either the Collection / Book name or beside the
High Level Topic Combo Box.
To select a number of topics, keep the CTRL button pressed on your keyboard as
you click on the areas you would like to search. These topic areas are:
-
Business Management
-
Superannuation
-
Tax
-
Accounting
-
Financial Planning
-
Education Services
-
Law
-
Occupational Health and Safety
-
Human Resources & Industrial Relations
Or Alternatively you can choose All Topics, which searches all CCH Online
Subscription Topics.
The user can also set the number of search results they would like to see on
each page by using the ‘Limit the number of hits per page’ drop down box. The
default is 10.
* A search done using the high-level topic areas will return results from ALL of
CCH online subscription content. Any result that a user doesn’t have access to
will be greyed out. If a greyed out result is of particular interest to you,
you should go to the CCH Catalogue and purchase that specific product.
Viewing Results
Results are turned in the same pop-up window as the advanced search query form.
They are in the format of Document Title, Document Abstract, and Document
Source. Results are ranked by percentage relevance.
Navigating through search results: The total number of search results is
displayed on the top left hand side of the pop-up window along with the time
taken to make the query. A user can move through their search results by using
the Forward, Backward, First Page and Last Page links that appear above the
search results. The number of results shown per page is dependent on the limit
set from the search query page. The default is 10.
Choosing a particular result
By clicking on a query result, the result is opened in the original
Subscription Content browser window. The user can then toggle between the
pop-up search results window and the main subscription content browser window
using the ALT TAB keys till they find their correct result.
If the user wants to refine their search they can do this by clicking on the
link “Refine your search”. Alternatively they can try a new search by clicking
on “New Search”.
At anytime the user may close the Results window by clicking on the “Close”
button on the top right hand corner of the pop-up window.
No search results returned
If your query returns no hits, some of the following tips may be of use.

Try widening your search by selecting one or more of the topics on the left of
the search window.
-
Try using less keywords in the "with all the words" box at the top and add them
to the "with at least one of the words" box.
-
Check your spelling.
-
Consider using a wildcard for stemming variations. e.g. "capitali*" instead of
"capitalize" or "capitalisation"
